We hope to answer those questions and more. Let’s get started!
2023 Humana Medicare Supplement Plans (Humana Medigap Plans)
2023 Humana Medicare Supplemental Plans can also be referred to as Humana Medigap Plans. Depending on the article you are reading or who you’re speaking with, you may see or hear it both ways (Medicare Supplement and Medigap). Don’t worry though, this Medicare insurance coverage is the same and, in this article, you will see it referred to as both.
Humana Medigap Plans are the secondary payor (Original Medicare is primary) and designed to cover deductibles, co-insurance, co-pays and other out-of-pocket cost insured under Original Medicare Part A and Original Medicare Part B, including durable medical equipment. Medicare Supplement Plans offered through Humana have no network and no referrals. You can see any provider nationwide, so long as they participate with Original Medicare (they can’t turn you away just because the name on the card says “Humana”). Fun fact, about 93% of all primary care doctors accept Medicare, but only about 70% are accepting new patients. But chances are, you will not have an issue finding a doctor that accepts Medicare.
Did You Know? Over 11 million people are enrolled in a Medicare Supplement Plan (Medigap Plan)!
Choosing the right Humana supplemental insurance is critical in many ways.
- How much Medicare coverage do you need? (No reason to over insure)
- How much will you pay for your Humana Supplement? (This depends on the Humana Supplemental Plan you choose and many other criteria)
- You may not be able to change Humana Medigap Plans in the future, due to health conditions (All Medicare Carriers have health underwriting that could be used to determine plan eligibility)
The most popular 2023 Humana Medigap Plans are:
- Humana Medicare Supplement Plan F (Humana Plan F)
- Humana Medicare Supplement Plan G (Humana Plan G)
- Humana Medicare Supplement Plan N (Humana Plan N)
- Compare Humana Plan F vs Humana Plan G vs Humana Plan N Benefits
Sometimes, you may hear or see Medicare Supplement Plans referred to something different, which can be confusing. (Example: Medicare Supplement Plan F, Medigap Plan F, Medicare Plan F or Medicare Part F. All are technically correct, but to lessen the confusion, its best to use the word “Plan”, because the only “Parts” to Medicare are Original Medicare Part A and Original Medicare Part B.
Remember, to be eligible for any Humana Medicare Supplemental Insurance, you must have or be eligible for Medicare Part A and Part B.
About Humana Medicare Supplement Plan F (Humana Medigap F)
For many years, the Supplemental Plan F was the most popular Medicare Supplement Plan. In fact, in 2016 and according to NAIC, approximately 60% of all Medigap enrollees had a Medigap Plan F.
Fast forward to 2019 and that number has dropped significantly to 35% enrolled in a Medigap Plan F. This is mostly due to MACRA and Plan G gaining popularity (more on that below).
Not everyone is eligible to enroll in a Humana Medicare Plan F.
Medicare passed a bill called “MACRA” that took effect January 1, 2020. It stated that Medigap Plans F, C and HD-F are not available for newly eligible Medicare beneficiaries (Jan 1, 2020, and after). So, if you had or were eligible for Medicare prior to January 1, 2020, then you can still enroll in a Humana Medigap Plan F. Or if you already have a Humana Plan F, you can still keep the plan for as long as you want (you are grandfathered in).
What does a Humana Medicare Supplement Plan F (Humana Plan F) cover?
The Humana Plan F is the most comprehensive supplemental insurance plan available. If you have a Humana Medicare Supplement Plan F, you will be covered 100% on all Medicare Part A and Part B approved services (hospital and doctor services).
- Medicare Part A deductible 100% (Medicare Part A Deductible: $1,556 in 2022)
- Medicare Part A co-insurance and copays for Hospice, Skilled Nursing and more
- Medicare Part B deductible 100% (Medicare Part B Deductible: $233 in 2022)
- 20% co-insurance that Medicare Part B otherwise requires you to pay
- Medicare excess charge (15%) that Medicare Part B otherwise requires you to pay (not applicable in all approved services)

About Humana Medicare Supplement Plan N (Humana Medigap Plan N)
