Medigap Insurance Plans work with Original Medicare and act as secondary insurance. These plans are also commonly known as Medicare Supplement Plans.
Medigap Plans can be a great choice for Medicare beneficiaries and provide excellent coverage. There are 12 standardized Medicare Supplemental Plans to choose from and coverage will vary depending on the plan you choose.
So, what do Medigap Plans cover? Not cover? In this article, you can expect to have a better understanding of the gaps Medicare Supplement Plans can leave to the member.
What do Medigap Plans Cover?
Medigap plans help cover Medicare deductibles, co-pays, and co-insurance.
Remember, Medigap Plans work with Original Medicare. This means that if Medicare approves the service, the Medigap Plan must also pay its portion of the remaining balance. However, if Medicare does not approve a service, then your Medigap plan will not either.
With that said, Medigap coverage is different depending on the plan you choose. The most well-known Medigap Plans are; Medigap Plan F, Medigap Plan G and Medigap Plan N.
Below is our 2023 Medigap Plans Benefit Chart. This chart shows a side-by-side glance at the benefits each plan offers.

Should I choose Plan F or Plan G?
That depends. Not everyone is eligible for Medicare Supplement Plan F. If you turned 65 or became new to Medicare after January 1st, 2020, you are not eligible for Plan F.
If you have a Plan F and want to change to another Plan F, you can still do that (you are grandfathered in).
Medigap Plan F is the most comprehensive plan you can purchase. It does cover all Medicare approved services 100%. Plan F is also the most expensive plan, for that reason.
Medicare Plan G is a great alternative and cost-effective solution to Plan F. The coverage is nearly the same, the only difference is the Part B deductible. See our cost example below of Plan F vs Plan G, indicating the annual savings with Plan G over Plan F.

Do Medicare Supplement Plans cover dental?
No, dental services are not a covered, standardized benefit with Medicare Supplement Plans. However, there are some companies that do include additional “member benefits” that may include discounts for dental services.

Will Medicare help pay for eyeglasses?

Does Medicare cover my prescriptions?
No, Medicare does not cover prescriptions.
