  • “How much do Humana Medicare Plans Cost”?
  • “Is Humana Medicare”?

We hope to answer those questions and more. Let’s get started!

About Humana Medicare Supplement Plans in 2022 (Humana Medigap Plans)

Humana Medicare Supplement Plans in 2022 can also be referred to as Humana Medigap Plans.  Depending on the article you are reading or who you’re speaking with, you may see or hear it both ways (Medicare Supplement and Medigap).  Don’t worry though, this Medicare insurance coverage is the same and, in this article, you will see it referred to as both.

Humana Medigap Plans are the secondary payor (Original Medicare is primary) and designed to cover deductibles, co-insurance, co-pays and other out-of-pocket cost insured under Original Medicare Part A and Original Medicare Part B, including durable medical equipment.  Medicare Supplement Plans offered through Humana have no network and no referrals.  You can see any provider nationwide, so long as they participate with Original Medicare (they can’t turn you away just because the name on the card says “Humana”).  Fun fact, about 93% of all primary care doctors accept Medicare, but only about 70% are accepting new patients.  But chances are, you will not have an issue finding a doctor that accepts Medicare.

Did You Know?  Over 11 million people are enrolled in a Medicare Supplement Plan (Medigap Plan)!

Choosing the right Humana supplemental insurance is critical in many ways.

  • How much Medicare coverage do you need? (No reason to over insure)
  • How much will you pay for your Humana Supplement? (This depends on the Humana Supplemental Plan you choose and many other criteria)
  • You may not be able to change Humana Medigap Plans in the future, due to health conditions (All Medicare Carriers have health underwriting that could be used to determine plan eligibility)

The most popular 2022 Humana Medigap Plans are:

Sometimes, you may hear or see Medicare Supplement Plans referred to something different, which can be confusing.  (Example: Medicare Supplement Plan F, Medigap Plan F, Medicare Plan F or Medicare Part F. All are technically correct, but to lessen the confusion, its best to use the word “Plan”, because the only “Parts” to Medicare are Original Medicare Part A and Original Medicare Part B.

Remember, to be eligible for any Humana Medicare Supplemental Insurance, you must have or be eligible for Medicare Part A and Part B.

About Humana Medicare Supplement Plan F (Humana Medigap F)

For many years, the Supplemental Plan F was the most popular Medicare Supplement Plan. In fact, in 2016 and according to NAIC, approximately 60% of all Medigap enrollees had a Medigap Plan F.

Fast forward to 2019 and that number has dropped significantly to 35% enrolled in a Medigap Plan F. This is mostly due to MACRA and Plan G gaining popularity (more on that below).

Not everyone is eligible to enroll in a Humana Medicare Plan F.

Medicare passed a bill called “MACRA” that took effect January 1, 2020.  It stated that Medigap Plans F, C and HD-F are not available for newly eligible Medicare beneficiaries (Jan 1, 2020, and after).  So, if you had or were eligible for Medicare prior to January 1, 2020, then you can still enroll in a Humana Medigap Plan F. Or if you already have a Humana Plan F, you can still keep the plan for as long as you want (you are grandfathered in).

What does a Humana Medicare Supplement Plan F (Humana Plan F) cover?

The Humana Plan F is the most comprehensive supplemental insurance plan available.  If you have a Humana Medicare Supplement Plan F, you will be covered 100% on all Medicare Part A and Part B approved services (hospital and doctor services).

  • Medicare Part A deductible 100% (Medicare Part A Deductible: $1,556 in 2022)
  • Medicare Part A co-insurance and copays for Hospice, Skilled Nursing and more
  • Medicare Part B deductible 100% (Medicare Part B Deductible: $233 in 2022)
  • 20% co-insurance that Medicare Part B otherwise requires you to pay
  • Medicare excess charge (15%) that Medicare Part B otherwise requires you to pay (not applicable in all approved services)

Being that the Human Supplement Plan F is the most comprehensive plan, it’s reasonable to expect to pay the highest premiums of the Humana Supplemental insurance plans available.

How much does a Humana Supplement Plan F (Humana Medigap Plan F Cost?

The cost of a Humana Supplemental Plan F will vary by the area/region you live and for several other factors, such as: Gender, Age, Tobacco Use and in some cases, household discounts (Where applicable)

In general, if you are a male or smoke, you can expect to pay a higher Medicare Supplement Premium than someone who doesn’t smoke.

As we surveyed our book of business since 2020, the lowest Supplement Plan F premium was $112/month with average premium for a Medigap Plan F was $185.  It’s always best to speak with one of our licensed agents that can provide a quote specific to you.

About Humana Medicare Supplement Plan G (Humana Medigap G)

The Humana Plan G is the best Humana Supplemental Insurance since sliced bread (Medigap Plan F). As we mentioned above, Plan G has taken the throne from Medigap Plan F and is now the most popular with our clients.

Fun Fact, about 50% of all Senior HealthCare Solutions clients have a Supplement Plan G.

Our clients find they can save up to 35% over the Medigap Plan F and we’ve seen that the annual rate increases tend to be less significant the Plan F.

What does a Humana Medicare Supplement Plan G (Humana Plan G) cover?

The coverage that a Humana Plan G offers is nearly identical to that of a Humana Plan F. The only difference in coverage, is that your Humana Supplement Plan G will require you to pay the deductible for Original Medicare Part B (Medicare Part B Deductible: $233 in 2022).  However, even though the Humana Plan G has a small deductible, the great savings typically far out way that of the Part B deductible.  Thus, making it the popular Supplement plan of choice.

To recap, the Humana Medicare Supplement Plan G covers the following:

  • Medicare Part A deductible 100% (Medicare Part A Deductible: $1,556 in 2022)
  • Covers other Medicare Part A co-insurance and copays for Hospice, Skilled Nursing and more
  • Covers the 20% co-insurance that Medicare Part B otherwise requires you to pay
  • Covers the Medicare excess charge (15%) that Medicare Part B otherwise requires you to pay (not applicable in all approved services)

How much does a Humana Supplement Plan G (Humana Medigap Plan G Cost?

As with all Humana Medigap Plans, the Humana Plan G premium will vary based on location, age, gender, tobacco use and, in some cases, household discounts.

Senior HealthCare Solutions reviewed their clients that were enrolled in a Supplement Plan G for 2020, the lowest monthly premium was $89.  The national average Medigap Plan G premium was $137.

About Humana Medicare Supplement Plan N (Humana Medigap Plan N)

The Medicare Supplemental Plan N was first offered in 2010, when Medicare introduced the “modernization act”.  During that time, some plans, like Medigap Plan J (and others) were phased out, while new plan, like Medigap Plan N (and others), were introduced.

At Senior HealthCare Solutions, we noticed our client’s enrollment rate for Plan N increased by nearly 50% from 2019 to 2021. This brings the overall enrollment rate for Medigap Plan N to 24% of our total enrollees (putting it above Plan F enrollment and 2nd to only the Plan G). Other the Medigap Plan G, the Medigap Plan N provides the most value for the dollar.

With that said, a Humana Medicare Supplement Plan N might not be for everyone.  The most important question we use to determine if a Humana Plan N is suitable is the frequency of doctor’s office visits (more to come of what a Humana Plan N covers below).

If you decide to enroll in a Humana Plan N, you can expect to pay lower premium, in comparison to a Humana Plan G.

What does a Humana Medicare Supplement Plan N (Humana Medigap Plan N) Cover?

There is a lot of bang for your buck with a Humana Supplement Plan N.  While it doesn’t cover everything 100% like the Humana Medicare Supplement Plan F, lets review below of that the Humana Plan N does cover.

  • Medicare Part A deductible 100% (Medicare Part A Deductible: $1,556 in 2022)
  • Medicare Part A co-insurance and copays for Hospice, Skilled Nursing and more
  • 20% co-insurance that Medicare Part B otherwise requires you to pay

To be clear, if you have a Humana Supplemental Plan N, you will be responsible to pay the following:

  • $50 copay for an ER visit (waived if admitted as an inpatient)
  • Medicare Part B deductible (Medicare Part B Deductible: $233 in 2022)
  • Medicare Part B excess charges (When applicable).  Not all providers charge excess fees and you can typically ask prior to the visit or procedure being performed

How much does a Humana Medicare Supplement (Humana Medigap Plan N) Cost?

As of 2021, the lowest Medigap Plan N premium for a Senior HealthCare Solutions client was $69.50 per month.  The national average is $139.  Cost will be different based on location, age, gender, tobacco use and any potential household discounts.

How to choose the right Humana Supplemental Insurance Plan

There are some questions to consider, such as:

  • How often to you visit a doctor each year?
  • Are you ok with paying a deductible?
  • Are you ok with paying $20 copays?
  • Would you prefer to pay a monthly premium to know your out-of-pocket cost will be zero? Or would you prefer to spend less monthly premium and ok with having some out-of-pocket cost when you go to the doctor or hospital.

We have licensed agents that can help guide you through some of these questions, and more, to help determine if a Humana Medigap Plan F, Humana Medigap Plan G or Humana Medigap Plan N is suitable for you (or other Humana Supplement Insurance Plans).

Our agents can also help determine if you may be a candidate for a Humana Medicare Advantage Plan.  We discuss Humana Advantage Plans is more detail below. Call today, 866-MEDIGAP (633-4427).

  1. Original Medicare + Medicare Supplement + Part D
  2. Medicare Advantage

There are a few types of Humana Medicare Advantage Plans, such as:

  • Humana PPO Plans
  • Humana HMO Plans
  • Humana Special Needs Plans

Humana offers special needs plans designed specifically for those with chronic illness and that are dual eligible (You have Medicare + Medicaid)

Humana additional benefits can include, but are not limited to;

  • Humana Dental Benefits
  • Humana Vision Benefits
  • Humana Hearing Benefits
  • Humana Gym Discounts
  • Humana Meal Delivery
  • Humana Part B Reimbursement

How much do Humana Medicare Advantage Plans Cost?

Believe it or not, there are many areas that offer $0 monthly premium Humana Advantage plans. While that’s not always the case, you can expect that, in general, Humana Medicare Advantage plans have a lesser premium that a Humana Medigap Plan. The national average premium for a Medicare Advantage plan is $35.55 per month.

All Humana Advantage plans have a “maximum-out-pocket” or “MOOP” which acts as your safety net and protects you from catastrophic health events.  The max-out-of-pocket varies depending on the area you live and the plan you choose.

In general, HMO plans will have a lower max-out-of-pocket than PPO plans.  The average MOOP for a HMO plan is $3,500 (there is no out-of-network MOOP with an HMO, because you are responsible for 100% of the cost for out-of-network services with an HMO).

The average MOOP for a PPO is $6700 in Network and up to $11,500 out-of-network.

Of course, you are not responsible to pay 100% of cost before the plan pays anything.  Each Humana Advantage plan can work a little different than the next, but in general, you can expect copays and co-insurance along for services rendered.

Keep in mind, you still need to pay your Medicare Part B premium each month (Medicare Part B Premium: $170.10 in 2022).

About Humana Medicare Plans for Veterans in 2022

Humana created specific Medicare Advantage Plans to honor Veterans.  Your VA benefits cover you at VA facilities, but with Medicare Advantage plans from Humana, you can access doctors and hospitals outside the VA system.  This can be especially helpful when you want a second opinion, or you need to travel.  There are 26 different Honor Plans available in 45 states.

These plans offer $0 monthly premiums, $0 copays for primary care physician visits and most all of these plans offer a Part B Giveback.  The Medicare Giveback Benefit is a Part B premium reduction offered by some Medicare Part C (Medicare Advantage) plans.  Once you enroll in a plan with a Giveback Benefit, Humana will pay some or all of your Part B monthly premium.  To be eligible for the Giveback benefit, you must be enrolled in Medicare Part A and Part B and you must pay your own premium.

Most Humana Honor Plans include Dental, Vision, Hearing, SilverSneakers and over-the-counter benefits.  The Humana Honor plan is recommended by AMVETS, VFW (Veterans of Foreign Wars, DAV (Disabled American Veterans) and USAA.

Humana Medicare Special Needs Plans

Humana offers four types of Medicare Special Needs plans designed specifically for those that qualify for one of the following:

  • Chronic Illness (For a list of eligible chronic illness, contact Senior HealthCare Solutions)
  • Dual Eligible (You have Medicare + Medicaid)
  • Institutional Special Needs Plans (I-SNPs) for people who live in a skilled nursing facility
  • Institutional-Equivalent Special Needs Plans (IE-SNPs) for people who live in a contracted assisted living facility and need the same kind of care as those who live in a skilled nursing facility

Humana Special Needs Plans have extra benefits and can have lower out-of-pocket costs.  Most plans include dental, vision, hearing, prescription drugs, transportation assistance, meals, over-the-counter benefits and personal emergency response Systems (PERS) to name a few.  All plans have a care coordinator to help you coordinate your specific care needs.

About Humana Part D Plans in 2022 (Humana Drug Plan)

Humana Part D Plans are designed to help cover and reduce the cost of your prescriptions (not including OTC items). There are two ways to obtain Humana Part D benefits:

  1. Enroll in a stand-alone Humana Drug Plan
  2. Enroll in a Humana Advantage Plan that include the Humana Part D benefit (most do)

A Humana Part D Plan can also be called a Humana Rx Plan or Humana Drug Plan.  Technically, all are correct, but if you ask Medicare, it’s Medicare Part D.

Every Humana Drug Plan has a formulary, which provides a list of covered drugs and the tier of the drug.  A tier is set by the company and can vary from plan to plan and company to company.  Simply put, the tier of the drug impacts the cost you pay.  The higher the tier, the more you pay.

Humana Part D plans allow you to fill prescriptions at your local pharmacy or have them delivered in the mail, your choice!

How much do Humana Part D Plans Cost?

Monthly premiums can vary from as low as $7 per month to over $100 per month.  To be clear, just because you pay more in premium, does not necessarily mean you have a “better plan”.  It’s important to speak with an experienced, licensed agent about your medications to determine a suitable plan and estimated cost.

If you don’t take any prescriptions, you should still consider enrolling in a Humana Drug Plan.  If you do not enroll in a drug plan when you are eligible and do not carry other form of creditable drug insurance, you may be at risk of the penalty from Medicare, which is 1% per month for life.

Humana Medicare Supplement vs. Humana Medicare Advantage

  1. Cost
    • Consider monthly premium to max-out-of-pocket differences
    • Humana Medicare Supplement Plans can have a higher monthly premium but can have lower out-of-pocket cost.
    • Whereas, Humana Medicare Advantage Plans can have a lower monthly premium, but potentially higher out-of-pocket costs (Especially if you hit your MOOP)
  2. Network
    • Humana Medicare Supplement Plans have no network and no referrals
    • All Humana Medicare Advantage Plans have a network and some plans may require referrals
  3. Additional Benefits
    • Humana Medicare Supplement Plans are designed to cover major medical cost. So, if to obtain additional benefits such as dental, vision, hearing or drugs coverage, you would need to purchase that coverage in addition to your Humana Medigap Plan
    • Most Humana Advantage Plans will include additional benefits, such as dental, vision, hearing, drugs and much more

Meet Melissa MacCalla

Medicare is not simple and can be hard, frustrating, and downright confusing for most. I love when I get someone on the phone and I am given the opportunity to explain the difference in plans to them and have Medicare make sense. I enjoy talking to clients year after year, hearing about their families growing or them asking about mine.

-Melissa

Oh my gosh!! I was so confused about the Medicare Supplement process. I am turning 65 soon and am retired and have always had insurance thru my former employer. I didn’t know a thing about going on Medicare and was struggling to sort it all out.

A friend of mine recommended contacting Senior HealthCare Solutions, so I did. Melissa was FANTASTIC!! She was professional, responsive, caring and friendly. She explained the steps I needed to take, gathered my information, helped me choose good plans for MY specific needs and took care of my applications over the phone. 1-2-3, eesy-peesy and I was done!! And it didn’t cost me a DIME!!! WOW!!! I HIGHLY recommend Senior Healthcare Solutions for anyone who’s overwhelmed with making the right choices with Medicare Supplemental Insurance and Rx coverage. It’ll take a load off your mind!
